Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was one of the first chroniclers of the modern woman. Among the most famous works of his brief but brilliant career are his large-format nudes. Bursting with colour and reflecting the artist's deep admiration for women and their forms, these works ushered in a new era of nude portraiture and caused a veritable scandal.
This exhibition catalogue offers a new perspective on this aspect of Modigliani's work, examining for the first time his portraits of emancipated women wearing boyish haircuts and loincloths.
Highly illustrated and including texts by eminent specialists, this volume also analyses Modigliani's cultural context in European Classicism. It establishes a unique dialogue between the art of the Italian artist and the paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures of Klimt, Jeanne Mammen, Picasso, Natalia Goncharova, Schiele and Paula Modersohn-Becker, among others, and traces his impact on future European modernism and New Objectivity.
