EUGÈNE BOUDIN, LE PÈRE DE L'IMPRESSIONNISME : UNE COLLECTION PARTICULIÈRE

Auteur(s) : Laurent Manœuvre (dir.)
Exhibition at the Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, 9 April - 31 August 2025
Born in Honfleur and raised in Le Havre, Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) set out from the outset to capture the fleeting effects of light on the Seine estuary. His pupil, Claude Monet, said he was ‘fascinated’ by the ‘instantaneity’ of these studies, the beginnings of Impressionism.
This exhibition catalogue brings together 80 works from the collection of Yann Guyonvarc'h, a little-known figure in the art world. Through sketches and paintings intended for the Salon, it reveals the development of this poet of the sky, from his early Normandy landscapes to his final seascapes of the Midi and Venice, and follows him on his travels to Brittany, Bordeaux, the North of France, Belgium and the Netherlands, not forgetting the famous beach scenes of Trouville and Deauville.
In this book, which contains more than two hundred works, this singular ensemble enters into dialogue with works from the André Malraux Museum of Modern Art in Le Havre, an exceptional selection of drawings from the Musée d'Orsay and a dozen paintings and drawings from the collections of the Musée Marmottan Monet.
