Auteur(s) : Christian Briend, Béatrice Coullaré, Éric de Chassey (dir.)
Exhibition at the Monnaie de Paris, 10 April - 7 September 2025
In March-April 1971, Georges Mathieu (1920-2012), then at the height of his fame, presented his "Medals and Paintings" in the historic salons of the Monnaie de Paris. Having worked with the institution since 1967, Mathieu had just produced an exceptional series of medals struck in vermeil, silver and bronze, commemorating eighteen moments in Western consciousness.
This catalogue of the exhibition organised more than 50 years after this event by the Monnaie de Paris, this time in association with the Centre Pompidou, compares the pictorial work of Georges Mathieu with his many creations for the Monnaie, of which the 10 franc coin - nearly 700 million were circulated between 1974 and 1987 - remains the most emblematic production.
