To date, there is no catalogue raisonné or complete list of the paintings by Henri Matisse (1869-1954). The most comprehensive of all the works devoted to the painter describes only 674 paintings (in black and white), without any commentary, and the volume by Pierre Schneider generally presented as the reference book on Matisse, despite its immense qualities, presents only 261.

This catalogue of Matisse's painted work, the most exhaustive study ever carried out, brings together 1,399 paintings and 14 pastels, making a total of 1,413 paintings over the artist's 65-year career. It provides a complete overview and will serve as the basis for all subsequent studies and research that will complete and refine it.

For each work listed, in addition to the label (date, dimensions, medium, collection) and the reproduction - in colour in 90% of cases - a provenance history has been compiled. At the end of the book there is a list of exhibitions linked to the citations in the text, an index of works in museums and an index of works in alphabetical order by title.
