Exhibition at Kasmin Gallery, New York, 4 April - 9 May 2024
In 1964, Claude (1925-2019) and François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008) organised their first joint solo exhibition, entitled Zoophites: an obsolete French term for invertebrate plant-like animals. It proved a fitting title for their work, which was mainly made up of fanciful representations of sheep, monkeys, rabbits, birds and other animals.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of this exhibition, Galerie Kasmin presented a revitalised exhibition of the Lalanne's work under the same title. The zoomorphic tables, chairs, sculptures and other objects all come from the collection of the Lalanne's eldest daughter, Caroline Hamisky Lalanne.
This exhibition catalogue brings together numerous reproductions of works as well as archive photographs, and presents some rare sculptures created in collaboration by the artist couple, who shared a house and a studio but rarely worked together.
