Gerhard Richter : Unikate In Serie = Unique Pieces In Series

Auteur(s) : Hubertus Butin

Exhibition at the Museum Folkwang, Essen, 7 April - 30 July 2017

At first glance, the phrase »unique pieces in series« seems to be a contradiction in terms. How can something that supposedly exists only once be present several times?

Yet, some of Gerhard Richter's (1932-) editions embody this particular principle of uniqueness in series. In painting editions, photographic works, prints, drawings and multiples, Richter developed a way of varying individual pieces within their respective identical production method. An entire edition thus consists of unique variants that are deliberately different.

This exhibition catalogue shows how Richter applies this creative concept in such a fascinatingly diverse way as a fundamental method within his art.
