A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Henri Navarre (1885-1971) is one of the great sculptors, glassmakers, ceramists and medalists of the 20th century, although he is less well known than his contemporaries - Lalique, Marinot, Colotte, Decorchemont, Mayodon and Lenoble.
Over the course of his long career, Navarre created more than a thousand vases and glass shapes using the most innovative techniques, mainly in the Art Deco period, and his works can be found in the world's most prestigious museums. He took part in the decoration of the liner Ile-de-France (1926), and in Paris created two metopes for the Palais de Chaillot (1937) and sculptures for the former Palais des Colonies (1937), now the Musée de l'Immigration. Shortly before his death, he bequeathed his studio collection to the City of Chartres, as well as voluminous unpublished archives that enabled the author to support the scientific corpus of his book.
The fruit of ten years' research, this first monograph devoted to Henri Navarre reveals the artist's interest in both modern technical inventiveness and classical inspiration. Highly documented scientifically, the book presents the artist's works in a lively and accessible way, and a central portfolio highlights his work in glass.
