Born in Osaka and living in Germany since 1997, the visual artist Chiharu Shiota (1972-) began by studying painting in Japan. Her first installation, Becoming Painting, produced in Australia, marked the start of a protean body of work that combines performance, body art and installations to explore universal notions such as time, dreams, death and human relationships, based on strong individual emotions. The artist draws inspiration for her work from her own emotions and significant events in her life.
This book is a retrospective of Chiharu Shiota's installations, and questions her identity in order to understand her artistic trajectory. The biographical perspective of this collection of milestones provides a much deeper understanding of the artist's creative process.
