Fruit of an important iconographical search among antic dealers and in private collections, this book is a photographical repertory of the frame through the centuries and in the countries which most contributed to its evolution. The most important part of this study is devoted to Italy, initiator country of the Renaissance style during the Quattrocento (15th century). The second half of the book presents, still in chronological order, the transformations of the frame in Spain, France and Netherlands.
Roberto Lodi and Amedeo Montananri drew up an atlas of the frame, creating a general overview of the typologies in use throughout the centuries, in a book both clear and very detailed.
