Auteur(s) : Alexandre Maral

New updated edition

The masterly restoration of the Royal Chapel at Versailles was completed in spring 2021 after more than three years of work. This is the occasion for a new edition of Alexandre Maral's book published in 2011.

Built under Louis XIV by Hardouin Mansart, inaugurated in 1710 and fully finished under Louis XV, Versailles royal chapel occupies an important place in art history, not only for its architecture, but also for its decoration and its extraordinary furniture, the latter mostly disappeared since the French Revolution but known by former sources. Its decoration mobilized about ten paintings, notably Antoine Coypel, Charles de La Fosse and Jean Jouvenet, and more than hundred sculptors, among whom Nicolas and Guillaume Coustou, Corneille van Clève or Robert Le Lorrain.

Benefiting from a large-scale photographic campaign carried out by the Château's photographers, the updated text is enriched by a presentation of this exceptional project by the architects who carried it out, revealing fully this gem of Versailles.
