Jean Messagier : Tous Les Sexes Du Printemps

Auteur(s) : Collectif

Exhibition at the Musée des beaux-arts, Dole, 22 March - 15 September 2019

The abstract painter Jean Messagier (1905-1999) was never done with the figure or figuration, and from the 1970s onwards he took the liberty of summoning up images from popular culture - Goldorak, the Marsupilami, Betty Boop - and glamorous figures - Lady Di or Greta Garbo - while at the same time shaking up his masters by quoting Delacroix, Matisse or Picasso with total irreverence. His work as a whole bears both his signature and the spirit of his time.

This exhibition catalogue attempts to show the work in its diversity, bringing together works from the 1940s to the 1990s, bringing together paintings, sculptures, gels and engravings.
