One of the main representatives of French non-figuration in the second half of the 20th century, Jean Le Moal appears today as a painter to be rediscovered, as his work goes beyond aesthetic divisions and resists theoretical simplifications. Too often associated with the clichés of post-war art, too quickly confined to the practice of "abstract landscaping" stemming from the École de Paris, his works implicitly invite another, much more contemporary reading.
This exhibition catalogue highlights the theme of landscape in his oils, drawings, watercolours, sculptures and models for stained glass windows or theatre sets.
