“In a sculpture, don't forget the sky, the sun, space and the wind, otherwise it will die.” Jean-Pierre Ghysels
After graduating from the Maredsous art school in 1953, Belgian sculptor Jean-Pierre Ghysels (1932-2024) was awarded a grant from the French government to study with Ossip Zadkine at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Winner of the Godecharle prize for sculpture in 1958, he spent two years travelling in the Middle East and the Orient, where he drew his inspiration from a certain philosophy of life that he translated into his work, which is imbued with balance and sensuality. From small-scale to monumental, the artist's works can be found in numerous private and public collections, both in Belgium and abroad.
This new edition of the monograph published in 2007 presents a remarkable selection of Ghysels' work, from his last figurative work - dating from 1965 - to his most recent abstract sculptures, which bear witness to a mature art.
