Madeleine Castaing

Auteur(s) : Emily Evans Eerdmans

Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992), internationally known antiquaire and decorator, has been the patron of several painters of the School of Paris and of artists of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and also friend of numerous personalities, among them Modigliani, Soutine, Erik Satie, Maurice Sachs, or Blaise Cendrars.

The “Castaing style” now is considered as a reference. Madeleine Castaing was inspired by the neoclassic aesthetic, she used to interpret her own way. Contemporary with the Italian Mario Praz, rival of Emilio Terry, she belongs to the same renewal movement regarding the omnipresence of Louis XV and Louis XVI, while distinguish herself by her style-mixing. In this book are studied her life and work, from her early years in Montparnasse to her country house Lèves and her shop on rue Jacob in Paris.
