Exhibition at Galerie Éric Coatalem, Paris, 6 November - 20 December 2024
Adored in the eighteenth century by all European and Russian collectors, but already out of fashion by the time of the Revolution and the Empire, Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805) only regained the favour of the greatest connoisseurs at the end of the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, beyond his own work, he remains one of the major artists of the second half of the eighteenth century, having analysed the intellectual and social aspirations of his contemporaries, and above all reconsidering the place of the child in the family.
This exhibition catalogue brings together 59 works by Greuze - paintings, pastels and studies - many of which have never been seen before or have remained in the shadows, on loan from 25 collectors. Each work is described in detail.
