Fully illustrated and documented, this biography of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) gives a new perspective on the life and works of one of the greatest 19th-century French sculptors, and put them back in the historical, political and artistic context of his time.
The book is organised around the great steps of the artist's life: his youth in Valenciennes and Paris, his stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, his struggle to impose his choices and ideas with the help of Napoleon III, and then his difficult last years from 1870 to his premature death in 1875.
