Exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, 15 January - 26 May 2023
New expanded edition
Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) left the history of art a body of work that is both transgressive and radical. Her rebellious nature, her extraordinary destiny, and the life and art she shared with her son Maurice Utrillo and her husband André Utter have never ceased to nourish the interpretation of her work.
This exhibition catalogue is an expanded edition of the catalogue published by the Centre Pompidou Metz in 2003, now out of print. With 16 new pages, it includes two additional essays and a larger body of work, adapted for the Paris exhibition.
It underlines the expressive and resolutely audacious character of the work of this artist, long considered to be on the fringes of the dominant currents of an era that saw the seeds of cubism and abstract art. Conceived as a portrait, this monograph offers a rereading of Valadon's work in all its complexity, thanks to various essays by specialists.
The book includes almost 200 works - including Edgar Degas's personal collection - on loan from the Centre Pompidou, which holds the largest number of works by Valadon, the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée du Louvre, the Musée de l'Orangerie, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and major private collections.
