From Artaud, Michaud, Fautrier, Malevitch, Jawlensky and Music to Boltansky, Cindy Sherman and cyberface artists, the book takes a thematic look at the evolution of the face from the twentieth century to the present day.

The course of the book is supported by monographic sections, devoted in particular to the analysis of works by representative artists: Giacometti, Bacon, Bonnard, Spillaert and Picasso. The author concludes with a consideration of the faces of absence, which illustrate the violence of a century marked by exodus, and whose contours a number of visual artists, including Shimon Attie, Sliman Mansour and Alham Shibli, are attempting to unveil.
