Exhibition at the Nouveau Musée national de Monaco, 9 July - 16 October 2022
Known for revolutionising the art of theatrical décor in the 1930s and 1940s, Christian Bérard (1902-1949) was also a painter, illustrator, fashion designer and interior designer. Admired by his contemporaries who affectionately nicknamed him Bébé, Bérard is one of those "eccentric modern" artists forgotten by art historians.
From the sets of the Ballets Russes and Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast to the drawings published in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, from the Théâtre de la Mode to the interiors created for Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles, this exhibition catalogue brings together more than 200 paintings, drawings, photographs, intimate letters and interior designs, together with previously unpublished texts, thus enabling us to rediscover Bérard's work in all its singularity.
