Fastes De Cour Au Xviie Siècle Costumes De Bellange Et De Berain

Auteur(s) : Paulette Choné, Jérôme De La Gorce

Exhibition at the Musée Condé, Chantilly, 13 May - 13 August 2015

This book presents for the first time the content of a portfolio acquired in 1854 by the Duke of Aumale, kept in the Musée Condy in the château de Chantilly. Twenty-three exceptional drawings by Jacques Bellange (ca. 1575-1616) and a series of thirty-four prints au trait by Jean Berain (1640-1711) evoke the splendour of the courts of Lorraine and France from the beginning to the end of the 17th century.

The richness, variety, fantasy and extreme refinement of this set illustrate what became, from that time, a genuine French area in the field of performing arts: the art of ballet, carousel and opera costumes. These graphic works are completed by loans from the Edmond de Rothschild collection in the Musée du Louvre and from other institutions.
