Exhibition at the Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch, Issoudun, 17 June - 30 September 2023
In 1948, Zao Wou-Ki left his native China for Paris, where he established himself as one of the leading representatives of the New School of Paris. An illustrious figure in lyrical abstraction, his international reputation continued to grow for more than 60 years.
From 1949 onwards, Zao Wou-Ki worked alongside painting as a printmaker. He quickly experimented with and mastered various techniques: lithography, which he discovered in the Desjobert studio, drypoint and etching on zinc, producing the plates himself in the Lacourière and Frélaut studio. The prints are a perfect reflection of the artist's pictorial work.
This exhibition catalogue brings together 200 of the 353 prints and 27 bibliophile books by Zao Wou-Ki donated to the Musée d'Issoudun by François Marquet-Zao. The book provides a full understanding of the artist's work, his development, his approaches and his various techniques.
