Secrets D'ébène: Le Cabinet De L'odyssée Du Château De Fontainebleau

Auteur(s) : Valérie Carpentier

Exhibition at the Château de Fontainebleau, 18 October 2014 - 26 January 2015

Precious testimony of the beginnings of French cabinetmaking in the first half of the 17th century, the cabinet called "of the Odyssey" is a remarkable piece of furniture of the château de Fontainebleau, where it has been decorating the Grands Appartements since the French Second Empire. The time of an exhibition, this sumptuous ebony cabinet opens its doors to reveal its secret drawers and a rich iconography around Ulysses and Alexander the Great.
In this exhibition catalogue, a set of works gathered around the cabinet allows enlightening in an original way the reading of this genuine novel sculpted in ebony, inspired notably on its inside drawers by the scenes of the Odyssey created by Primatice in the now-disappeared Ulysses gallery at the château de Fontainebleau.
