Picasso Landscapes: Out Of Bounds

Auteur(s) : Laurence Madeline (dir.)

Exhibition at the Mint Museum, Charlotte, 11 February - 21 May 2023 ;
at the Cincinnati Art Museum, 24 June - 15 October 2023

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) devoted himself to depicting landscapes throughout his life. Through his representations of landscapes, Picasso established a dialogue with key artists of previous centuries, from Nicolas Poussin to Paul Cézanne, thus inscribing himself in the tradition of European painting, while at the same time insisting on his separate status. Yet in Picasso's vast oeuvre, it is the landscapes that have received the least attention from scholars.

This catalogue of the first exhibition devoted exclusively to the artist's landscapes brings together paintings and sculptures from 25 American and European public and private collections. It traces the ways in which Picasso used landscape throughout his life to establish himself in new surroundings and to move towards new styles of painting and sculpture.
