Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955) considered drawing as a work in itself, but also as a preparatory work to the creation of a painting. The painter's graphic work, remained until now rarely shown to the public, was gathered and classified during many years by Françoise de Staël, his widow, deceased in 2012.
This catalogue raisonné of Nicolas de Staël's drawings allows for the first time to have an exhaustive look on his graphic production, abstract and figurative. The richness of his tools and techniques, as black lead, charcoal, felt-tip, engraving, China ink, lithograph or papiers collés, reveals the scale of the painter's researches.
