Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 12 November 2022 - 12 February 2023
Linked to the emergence of Expressionism in Germany in the early decades of the twentieth century, artists Käthe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Gabriele Münter and Marianne Werefkin challenged the dominant ideals of female identity at a time of great societal change.
Bringing together 65 works, this exhibition catalogue sheds light on the experiences and perspectives of these innovative artists who, although less well known than their male counterparts, played a central role in the development of radical new approaches to art in Europe. In particular, the book highlights the individuality of each artist and their affinities.
