Exhibition at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, 27 October 2023 - 18 February 2024
The painter, graphic artist and caricaturist Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) was one of the first masters of the Bauhaus in Weimar, and later in Dessau. In 1937, he emigrated to New York, where he worked until the end of his life. The Austrian artist is famous for his paintings of buildings, crystalline architectures of incomparable monumentality and harmonious colours. However, today's approach often overlooks the originality and richness of the artistic facets of his work, which reflects many aspects of modernism.
This exhibition catalogue presents all the facets of Feininger's work and the stages of his life on the basis of the most recent research. With some 140 paintings, drawings, caricatures, watercolours, woodcuts, photographs and objects from all the creative phases, the book presents a complete picture of Feininger's work, focusing on his major works from the 1930s and his exile in America.
