Exhibition at Les Abattoirs, Toulouse, 22 September 2023 - 21 January 2024
From the post-war years to the end of his life, Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) frequented various artistic circles, photographers, writers and philosophers, and interacted with a whole new generation of intellectuals, from the late surrealists to the nascent existentialists. Open to his time, sociable, active and creative in the dissemination of his work, he was watched by his contemporaries and admired for his expressive figurative sculpture and painting, which seem to reflect a battered world undergoing reconstruction but also in full questioning.
Combining sculptures, paintings, engravings, photographs and archival documents, this exhibition catalogue invites us to delve into these years, which were essential for understanding the artistic and intellectual changes of the post-war period.
