Le Témoin Meconnu : Pierre-Antoine Demachy, 1723-1807

Auteur(s) : Françoise Roussel Leriche, Marie Petkowska Le Roux

Exhibition at the Musée Lambinet, Versailles, 15 January - 18 May 2014

This book is the catalogue of the first retrospective devoted to the French painter Pierre-Antoine Demachy (1723-1807).

Privileged witness of the Age of Enlightenment, Pierre-Antoine Demachy knew how to make paintings which lend to contemplation of sublimed cities. Combining rigour of construction lines and melancholic torments of stormy skies, he is not only one of the transition points between Classicism and Romantism, but also one of the first to picture a futurist city, prefiguring what is called nowadays urban planning.
