La Salle Des Gardes De La Reine

Auteur(s) : Collectif

At the entrance of the Grand appartement de la Reine at the Château de Versailles, the guard room served as a vestibule in which the guards responsible for protecting the sovereign were posted. This room is the only one in the Queen's flat to have retained all of its 1680s décor, despite the transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries, which did not alter its perfect unity.

It was through this room that, on 6 October 1789, rioters burst into the flat, shooting one of the bodyguards who raised the alarm to save the Queen, Marie-Antoinette.

This book presents the Salle des gardes de la Reine following its restoration in 2019, which has restored the splendour of the ceiling painted by Noël Coypel (1628-1707) and the magnificent polychrome marble panelling of one of the most important decorative ensembles dating from the reign of Louis XIV still visible at Versailles.
