Exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, 28 February - 26 August 2024
Hervé Di Rosa (1959-) has a history that stretches from Dada to the punk movement, via Jean Dubuffet and CoBrA. He made a name for himself in the early 1980s as part of the Figuration Libre movement, drawing his inspiration from popular culture. He then devoted himself to a singular project: entrusting his images to different crafts and techniques around the world (Sofia and Lisbon, Ghana, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Mexico, Florida and Andalusia). Alongside his art, Di Rosa collects what he calls the "modest arts", aesthetic productions made outside the field of fine art. In 2000, he founded the Musée international des arts modestes in his home town of Sète.
Thanks to a major donation made by the artist in 2013 and a number of loans of recent works, this exhibition catalogue brings together pieces from the Figuration Libre period, modest art objects and recent paintings to give an overview of this artist like no other.
