Exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, 7 March - 25 June 2023
Georg Baselitz (1938-) is undoubtedly one of the most influential painters and sculptors of our time. His work eludes categorisation, but returns again and again to his search for a new approach to updating classical figurative painting. In a famous turning point in 1969, he literally turned his paintings upside down, succeeding in changing the public's habits and sharpening its perceptions.
This exhibition catalogue presents a visual dialogue between Baselitz and the Old Masters. The German artist himself organised the selection of works, focusing exclusively on nude painting. The work thus demonstrates the fundamental role of the nude in European art and illustrates the influence of Mannerism's break with classical rules on Baselitz's work.
