Exhibition at the Albertina, Vienna, 18 February - 19 June 2022
While Edvard Munch's (1863-1944) pessimistic and melancholic view of the world crucially defines our understanding of his work, many important post-war and contemporary artists have been inspired by aspects of his work.
Through sixty works by Munch juxtaposed with those he inspired, this exhibition catalogue analyses how nine of these artists - Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Louise Bourgeois, Miriam Cahn, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Tracey Emin, Jasper Johns, and Andy Warhol - engaged with the Norwegian artist's work at different points in, or throughout, their careers.
Essays explore each artist's unique relationship with Munch, including how women artists have been inspired by his analyses of loneliness, fear and trauma.
