Exhibition at Galerie Strouk, Paris, 13 October - 25 November 2023
Robert Combas (1957-) and Jean Pierre Raynaud (1939-) use the same material: paint.
Combas has been influenced by popular art, Pop art, comic strips, rock and advertising; Raynaud, from the early 1960s onwards, has been obsessively using motifs and objects linked to his own history, reappropriating them by giving them a formal value while intervening slightly to give them their full meaning.
In this exhibition catalogue, two worlds look at each other in an incongruous mirror: that of the mental Jean-Pierre Raynaud, speaking to us of introspection in this painting that empties itself of all painting; that of the knight Robert Combas, speaking to us of instinct and conquest in these paintings that overflow with paint.
By choosing to present these two artists in a way that resonates with each other, Galerie Strouk is going beyond a search for correspondences or discordances between their highly singular works, allowing us to witness the repercussions of one sensibility on another, and vice versa.
