Ben Nicholson: From The Studio

Auteur(s) : Collectif

Exhibition at the Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (UK), 26 June - 24 October 2021

Throughout his career, Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) transformed common household items into extraordinary experiments in abstract art; his studio was filled with objects that inspired him. Whether patterned earthenware jugs, cut glass cups, spanners, hammers or scissors, these ordinary personal objects were an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration for the artist.

This exhibition catalogue brings together for the first time Nicholson's paintings, reliefs, prints and drawings, alongside his personal objects and studio tools. It traces the evolution of the artist's style from his early still lifes to his later abstract works. The book also discusses his relationships with Winifred Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, as well as his encounters with other great names of modernism, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian.
