Exhibition at the Museum de Fundatie, Zwolle, 5 October 2024 - 16 March 2025
Marianne von Werefkin (1860-1938) played a key role in the development of Expressionism in the early twentieth century, thanks to her knowledge of the latest developments in Paris. She brought this knowledge to Germany and later to Switzerland, and developed a unique way of painting, using rhythm and colour to convey her vision and emotions. Social themes, such as the lives of workers and women, have remained of great importance to her. The artist was a member of several artists' networks, including the Blaue Reiter, alongside her companion Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Franz Marc and Gabriele Münter.
This exhibition catalogue provides an overview of Marianne von Werefkin's colourful world. Several essays provide a multifaceted overview of the life, work and importance of the ‘Russian Rembrandt’, as she was nicknamed at the age of 20.
