Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, 13 March - 15 June
Widely regarded as one of the greatest portrait painters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944) produced intimate portraits of family members, friends, mistresses, writers, artists, patrons and collectors, as well as an extraordinary series of self-portraits. With energetic brushstrokes, vivid colours and a sense of direct engagement with the sitter, these works have had a powerful influence on the portrait genre.
Organised around four themes - Family, Bohemia, Collectors and Patrons, Friends and Rescuers - this exhibition catalogue brings together 40 of Munch's most significant portraits, highlighting the wide range of styles, techniques and media the artist used. The book offers numerous comparisons and analyses of the range of portraits Munch produced during his lifetime, placing his work in the cultural and historical context of his time.
