Exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, 5 April - 28 August 2023
From 1983 to 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) and Andy Warhol (1928-1987) signed some 160 paintings "four-handed", some of the greatest of their respective careers. Basquiat admired Warhol as a key figure in the art world, the initiator of a new language and an original relationship to popular culture. In return, Warhol found in Basquiat a renewed interest in painting. With Basquiat, he began to paint manually again, with a brush. A genuine visual dialogue developed between them, culminating in the creation of works bearing both their names.
This exhibition catalogue looks back on this joint adventure through texts and images. It brings together emblematic paintings by the duo, individual works and works by other personalities, such as Michael Halsband, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Lady Pink, Kenny Scharf, etc., in order to situate this episode in the New York art scene of the 1980s.
