Exhibition at the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris, 6 September 2024 - 5 January 2025

The Borghese Collection was begun in the early seventeenth century by Cardinal Scipio Caffarelli-Borghese (1577-1633), who established himself as one of the greatest patrons of the arts through his ambition and refined taste. Scipio Borghese enjoyed an influential position thanks to the nepotism of his uncle, Pope Paul V (1605-1621). He used every means - legal and otherwise - to develop his collection, and had a sumptuous villa built in Rome to house it.

This extraordinary collection has survived the centuries, continuing to grow despite the occasional dispersal of some of its works. Now a museum, the Galleria Borghese remains a true symbol of the prosperity of Baroque Rome.

This exhibition catalogue brings together a group of major works by famous artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including Caravaggio, Bernini, Titian, Veronese, Botticelli, Raphael, Rubens, Jacopo Bassano, Lorenzo Lotto, Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Baglione and Annibal Carracci, which are rarely loaned abroad. Enriched by contributions from experts, it offers an in-depth analysis of the works on display, the context in which they were created and their paths through history, putting into perspective the historical and artistic importance of the famous and unique Borghese collection.
