Exhibition at the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin, 19 April - 4 August 2024

Largely ignored during his lifetime, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) was a meticulous painter of landscapes, often depicting solitary figures or groups of people in dramatic settings. His work has inspired many artists to this day.

This exhibition catalogue examines the role played by Berlin's Nationalgalerie in bringing Friedrich to the forefront of modern art history from the early twentieth century onwards. It brings together sixty paintings, including several emblematic works, and fifty drawings, and reports on the latest research into Friedrich's technique: his training in Copenhagen, his sketches, preparatory drawings and underdrawings, and his unconventional selection and use of pigments.
