The last little-known Impressionist painter, Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) painted his family's garden in Yerres, Île-de-France, between 1860 and 1879. The garden, which still exists, virtually unchanged, is located in what was then a village. It was built according to the precepts described in Audot's treatise, from which the author of this study quotes large extracts.

The study of the paintings is based on old documents, and an attempt is made to compare them photographically. The final part, entitled 'as the days went by', offers a complete and well-documented biography of Caillebotte, followed by the life of his work after him.
