Exhibition at the Musée Jenisch, Vevey, 15 October 2021 - 9 January 2022
Born in New York, Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) made his career in Germany and became a major figure of the European avant-garde. Initially working in etching and lithography, he discovered woodcutting in 1918 and made it his specialty. As an engraver, but also as a painter and draughtsman, the artist translated his formal and conceptual research into various media.
This exhibition catalogue presents a number of paintings, drawings and unusual objects alongside a rich selection of prints, thanks to exceptional loads from private collections. Two particularly important themes in Feininger's work are highlighted: urban and maritime subjects, from which the artist proposed multiple variations.
