The German painter Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) was not only "the woman at Kandinsky's side". The growing number of studies carried out over the last two decades have strengthened her reputation as one of the main protagonists of the German avant-garde. Her use of saturated colours and blocky lines, inspired by both Expressionist and Fauvist tendencies, even led to a marked change in Kandinsky's own palette and compositions.

This catalogue accompanies the first retrospective of Gabriele Münter's work in Austria. Divided into ten themes, it lists the stages of his life, which often coincided with changes in his style. It includes more than 130 works from international public and private collections - oil paintings, printed graphic works, drawings, photographs, craft objects and sketchbooks - which provide a better understanding of the many facets of the artist's work.
