The name of Pierre Chareau will always remain attached to the Maison de Verre (House of glass) in Paris, first building with a metallic structure and glass walls. Just as radical was his approach of furniture and interior design, which he structured by an innovative use of metal.
Real lover of all arts, Chareau was musician, music connoisseur, interested in theatre, dance, avant-garde poetry and literature, and collected works of art, notably the first works of Synthetic Cubism.
The economical crisis then the Second World War forced him into exile; he settled in New York, and rebuilt himself gradually in an effervescent artistic environment, where the old European schools enriched the young generation of American artists looking for art and culture.
More than the itinerary of an architect, this book tells the life of a discreet man and constitutes his first biography.
