Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) devoted himself to sculpture practically from the start of his long career. For him, sculpture was not an inferior art, but a form of expression comparable to painting, drawing or engraving.
The Spanish artist used all the materials at his disposal in his sculptures - wood, bronze, iron, cement, steel and plaster - thus demonstrating the primacy of the medium in his eyes. The human body has also proved an enduring source of fascination and creative reinvention for the artist, and his sculptural work ingeniously balances deformation and sensuality throughout his prodigious career.
This exhibition catalogue brings together a meticulous selection of Picasso's sculptures that reflect the plurality of styles employed by Picasso to represent the three-dimensional forms of the human body.
