La Statuaire Des Bari Du Haut Nil The Bari Statuary Of The Upper Nile

Auteur(s) : Jean Baptiste Sevette, Dominik Remondino

Far from being idols worshipped by their owners, the wooden statuettes of the Bari people had, in all likelihood, a function comparable to that of tutelary spirits of the home and family.

The result of the collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Sevette, one of the few specialists in the material culture of Sudan, and Dominik Remondino, an art historian specialized in African cultures, this unique work presents a state of the art of Bari statuettes. It provides a comprehensive overview of the Egyptian expeditions to Sudan, the foundation of Khartoum in 1821, and the first contacts between Westerners and the Bari population, as well as defining the key figures of the emerging collections of Sudanese ethnographic objects.

The book includes sixty-four works, of which only six are privately owned, as most of the Bari statuary known today is held in international museum institutions.
