Exhibition at the Musée de Grenoble, 22 October 2022 - 19 March 2023

Man's relationship with nature is one of the major concerns of the 21st century. Present from the walls of Lascaux to the frescoes of Greco-Roman antiquity, the question of the link between human beings and their environment does not seem to be new. The appearance of fragments of nature, from the Trecento in Italy and then during the Renaissance, in the background of mythological or religious scenes, undoubtedly marks a profound change in the way of considering the place of man in his environment. The presence of nature in the history of Western art is therefore a decisive and enlightening factor for those who wish to understand the relationship that has been maintained with it over the centuries.

This exhibition catalogue brings together Philippe Cognée, Cristina Iglesias, Wolfgang Laib and Giuseppe Penone, four internationally renowned visual artists for whom the question of the relationship between humans and nature is essential. Coming from very different backgrounds, these artists shed light on this relationship from resolutely original and singular aspects through their original plastic proposals.
