Cindy Sherman: Anti-Fashion

Auteur(s) : Collectif

Exhibition at FOMU, Antwerp, 28 September 2024 - 2 February 2025

Cindy Sherman (1954-) is known for her pioneering work in photography, in which she explores themes of identity, gender and social roles by transforming herself into different characters in a variety of settings. The artist expresses her interest in fashion in a subversive way: her photographs depict people who are anything but desirable, contradicting all the conventions of haute couture and the usual representations of beauty.

This exhibition catalogue approaches Cindy Sherman's photographic work from a new angle, focusing on the interaction between fashion and art. It shows how her numerous commissions for magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and her close collaboration with famous designers, are a constant source of inspiration for her.
