Exhibition at the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, September 18 - December 29, 2024

Coming from a variety of cultures, designers from the African diaspora cannot be monolithically defined, and their work reflects both personal experience and a wide range of influences.
This exhibition catalog, which traces the local and global impact of creators from the African diaspora, is one of the first books devoted to the subject. Focusing on the 20th and 21st centuries, it presents some of the best examples of innovative fashion throughout the period, and contextualizes how the work of diaspora designers can address contemporary issues including decolonization, sustainability and social equity.
The book features leading designers such as Oliver Rousteing, Tremaine Emory, Virgil Abloh and their work at Balmain, Denim Tears and Off-White, Pathé'O, Stephen Burrows, Patrick Kelly and their iconic designs of the 1970s and 1980s, or the creative output of Hylan Booker at the helm of Worth during the London revival of the 1960s.
